Twitter: What Does It All Mean?



Since 2008, Twitter has steadily become one of the most used tools for conversation, trending topics, events and most recently – a source for news, political platforms, and an unprecedented direct access to celebrity and public figures.

If you’re not very active on Twitter, you may feel a bit underwhelmed – I know I did when I first joined. What is the big deal anyway? Isn’t it just a bunch of people telling us what they’re eating and where their next vacation is? Well – yes, sometimes but the success of Twitter lies in the vast capability of broadcasting to people that already share the same interests, ideas and people and businesses like you. In other words, your audience finds you – not the other way around as it used to be.

In another post, we’ll be talking about several uses for Twitter including for business, and you may want to take a look at this post we created on just what kinds of tweets you should be making to keep relevant and well-rounded. But for now, let’s explore what all those symbols and hashtag things are all about.

TWITTER TERMS


1.     The @handle (username)

Everyone that uses Twitter has a username. In order to include people or companies in the conversation, you must “tag” them on your tweet preceded with an @ symbol. For example, “We’re having a blast learning #socialmedia with @fuzz today!” (@fuzz) is my account, so I’ll get a notification that you were talking about me. This also makes it very likely I’ll reply or “re-tweet” your post – gaining us both more attention.

2.     The #hashtag

Twitter is all about conversations happening in any given moment. The hashtag symbol # followed by a word, or group of connected words makes them trackable and includes that topic in a group of others that may be discussing the same topic.

If a topic of interest is appearing with a large amount of people, it is considered a “trending” topic and more likely to appear in searches and the new “moments” feature Twitter just launched. In our earlier example, “We’re having a blast learning #socialmedia with @fuzz today!” – anyone searching about #socialmedia would see our tweet along with all of the others. It’s a great way to put your topic or industry in the front of the line.

3.     Tweet

One writes a letter for the mail, an e-mail message for your inbox, and a “tweet” on Twitter. This is the message you will send out to the world at any given moment. The format is usually on the more casual side, and you only have 140 characters to say what you want to say. The micro-blogging platform allows a lot of information and conversations to be seen at one time. Imagine entering a cocktail party, and hearing part of a conversation here, part of one there  and when you hear something that interests you, you can stay a bit longer to hear more. Twitter is very similar.

4.     Follow

With over 300 million active users per month, things can get a little noisy. To help focus what kind of tweets you’d like to see, or to keep track of certain companies or people you can “follow” them. The more people follow you, the bigger your audience becomes. Following is usually a two-way street in the Twitter verse. Imagine exchanging phone numbers at that cocktail party. It would be kind of rude to only ask for one and not give one in return.

Branden James added to "Tim Janis: The American Christmas Carol" at Carnegie Hall


New York, NY, December 4, 2015: Classical-crossover vocal artist Branden James has been added to the lineup for Tim Janis' "The American Christmas Carol" on December 4th. The concert begins at 8pm at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

"The American Christmas Carol" will feature a full orchestra and 200 voice choir. In celebration of the show's 10th year at Carnegie Hall, Branden will be joined by special guests Neil Sedaka, Sarah McLachlan, Zachary Levi, Ioan Gruffudd, and a host of additional performers.

Proceeds will benefit Kate Winslet's Golden Hat Foundation, which aims to change the way people with autism are perceived, and Sarah McLachlan's School of Music, which provides no cost music instruction to at-risk children and youths.

5 Ways to Engage Your Clients with Twitter


Yes, that is J.K. Rowling, the infamous creator of the world of Harry Potter. Unless you've been living under a rock, she is also the most popular and successful author of the book series, and eventual inspired film series, both the highest-grossing pieces in history. She also tweets, and has over 4.5 million followers.

Using Twitter for business, let alone for personal use can be a bit overwhelming (trust me, I know). Back when I joined in 2008 - I didn't even know how this 140 character limit 'new thing' was even worth it. It has now become much more than finding out what Oprah had for breakfast.


If you're not on Twitter now, you'd better be. By the year 2020, 85% of the buyer-seller interaction will happen online through social media and video.  
So here are five things that I have found really help get you started and continue to keep you engaged with the world of the tweeters:


1. Rotate what you tweet about:

Twitter is all about the conversation. Although some may call it a "micro-blog," the world of tweeting is much more of a two-way street. No one cares about what you have to say until you care about them.  As you RT (re-tweet) other interesting posts, reply and mention others, you'll also want to broadcast your own valuable content. Your tweets about your business should rotate on different types of posts - and here are some suggestions:


  • Sales/Marketing
    • Event coming up (sign-up), coupon codes, limited sales, free book signing 
  • Company Info
    • photos of product or personality, new/highlight staff members, FAQs, Press
  • General Industry Info
    • Articles about your industry, re-tweets, infographics, videos

2. Be a Human

The old days of marketing worked, because there was an actual person behind the sale. The joke about the "Bible salesman" holds value, because if you show you're human, people will be drawn to you. This is even more important in today's digital culture, where automation and lack of personal presence runs the scene. Every once in a while, tweet something personal, like your favorite movie coming up, or having lunch at your favorite eatery. 

3. Call-To-Action

There have been studies to show that people are more likely to interact with a post if it contains some sort of "call-to-action." Things like "Help me pick..." or "Vote for.." or even "Please RT" seem to show results. Again, Twitter is all about community. (Oh, and also - leave enough room for someone to RT and add their own comment when you can.)

4. Participate in trending topics

At the front and center of the Twitter main page is "Trending Topics." These are things people are talking about right now. Your tweet has a much higher chance of being seen if you are participating in the current trend, these are still strongly #driven by hashtags, but now can contain anything within the tweet. You can even adjust location settings to your local area to see what is trending nearby rather than globally. 

5. Reply Quickly, Reply All

Over 350,000 tweets are being posted every MINUTE! That means what was happening an hour ago is gone. If someone follows you, mentions you, or talks about you on Twitter - you don't want to wait too long to reply, you may miss out to someone else. Also, if you're mentioned with others, it is common courtesy to reply to everyone in the tweet - besides the more the merrier!
